Using Magick to Fight Forest Fires
I͎ a͎͎b͎͎so͎l͎u͎t͎e͎l͎y͎ ͎l͎o͎v͎e͎ ͎l͎i͎v͎i͎n͎g͎ ͎i͎͎n͎ ͎t͎h͎e͎ ͎w͎o͎o͎d͎s, but it’s a frightening and saddening time to be a forest dweller right now. I go out my back door and feel the crunching beneath my feet. A great dryness has spread all throughout the Island I live on.
Forest fires are burning in several areas near me. Communities and homes are being evacuated, and in many cases, evacuation can be very difficult or even impossible. There are certainly both pros and cons to living isolated!
Aside from the obvious physical factors contributing to these fires1, there is an energetic/spiritual component to what’s happening here.
For several different reasons, there is an elemental imbalance on Mother Earth right now. Humanity has unfortunately contributed to this imbalance by destroying wetlands, choking rivers, draining springs, and taking many other destructive actions.
These will very quickly and heavily disrupt a local area’s elemental network. I have found that when we do these harmful things to the lands (especially the land under our own care2), the magickal land guardians that maintain harmony between elemental forces in the woods tend to step back. They let this imbalance go unchecked because they cannot/will not protect our lands without our cooperation.
But in reality, we humans don’t even need to physically mess with the land in order to harm it. When we neglect our spiritual connection to the water element, the earth (as a part of our collective consciousness) is affected. Remember, we are all a part of one infinite consciousness that connects all things.
Humanity is going through an inner drought, and Earth is responding in turn with an outer drought. In a way, our directionless and foolish ways have actually manifested natural distortions in how Earth balances herself.
So in comes fire. In its balanced state, it is a powerful and necessary force. It governs transformation, will, and purification. It removes stagnation. But when fire becomes unbalanced, it becomes aggressive, greedy. It consumes instead of creating. It pushes the natural ecosystem into crisis. By pushing the water element to become too weak to temper fire’s consuming nature, we’ve “invited” fire to do terrible damage to our lands.
So please, if you use magick at all, be intentional with me on bringing balance and water to our lands. Use gratitude and harmony to strengthen our water elementals. We, as magicians, should use our knowledge and ability to be stewards who sustain the balance between the forces of creation.
